Flonnie T. Anderson, The Maroon and Gold, 1961

Flonnie T. Anderson (1930-2025) attended the historic Black schools of Forsyth County and later taught at both her alma mater, Atkins High School, and Anderson. The English and drama teacher with a degree from West Virginia State and teaching certificate from NC A&T spent more than 30 years serving the youth in the area before retiring in the late 1980s. Wayne Ledbetter, Anderson High School class of 1970, recalled Anderson saw drama, speech, and debate talent in students they didn't realize they had: "She was pushing us to do something that most people wouldn't normally think a Black high school could do." Anderson also had an amazing theater career, starring in several roles and becoming the first Black actor to grace the stage of The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem.
