Florence D. Creque

Florence D. Creque, Golden Outlook, 1966

A friend of Florence D. Creque (Circa 1929-1985) said in her 1985 Winston-Salem Journal obituary that Creque was "one of the finest leaders Winston-Salem has ever had" during her career as an educator and civil servant. A Spanish teacher at Paisley High School, Creque also held roles within the city and was at one point the highest-ranking woman and second highest-ranking African American in city government at the Department of Human Services. She was also the director of the Neighborhood Service Center of the Experiment in Self-Reliance, an anti-poverty agency in the city. Creque earned degrees from North Carolina College and Atlanta University and was married to Dr. Luritz C. Creque, the former chief of staff at Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital. Dothula Baron, Paisley class of 1966 and a student of Creque's, said her teacher felt "a responsibility ... to teach students to be better human beings" by encouraging them to serve and leading by example in giving back to the community.
